Scendendo le scale, Vanni dice: “Ciao, Barbara”. Guarda gli abitanti del villaggio.
Descending the stairs, Vanni says, “Ciao, Barbara.” He looks at the villagers.
Poi prende Barbara tra le braccia e la bacia.
Then he takes Barbara in his arms and kisses her.
I bambini guardano infelici. Vediamo la benda sulla testa di Michelina dove è stata colpita dalla pietra.
Quando Saro si avvicina a Barbara e Vanni, lei interrompe il bacio e abbassa lo sguardo.
The children look on unhappily. We see the bandage on Michelina’s head where the rock hit her.
As Saro steps closer to Barbara and Vanni, she ends the kiss and looks down.
Vanni dice bruscamente a Barbara: "Non mi aspettavate più, eh?" Guarda Saro con aria feroce. "Ma io la mia parola, la so mantenere. E quello che mi è costato arrivare fin quassù! Per te l'ho fatto!" La sua sintassi siciliana aggiunge enfasi alle parole più importanti per lui.
Vanni says brusquely to Barbara, “You weren’t expecting me anymore, huh?” He looks fiercely at Saro. “But I keep my word. And what it cost me to get all the way up here! And I did it for you!” His Sicilian syntax adds emphasis to the words that are most important to him.
"Per te!" Lui alza il braccio per schiaffeggiarla, ma Saro lo ferma.
"No, Vanni!" risponde lei, con le lacrime sulle guance. "No, non ti ho tradito".
“For you!” He lifts his arm to slap her, but Saro stops him.
“No, Vanni!” she answers, tears on her cheeks. “No, I didn’t betray you.”
Lei abbassa lo sguardo. “Vengo con te”.
Vanni lancia un'occhiata di avvertimento a Saro, poi prende Barbara per un braccio. “Andiamo”. Si allontanano.
She looks down. “I’m going with you.”
Vanni looks warningly at Saro, then takes Barbara’s arm. “Let’s go.” They walk away.
“Barbara!” la chiama Buda. Lei si volta, mentre Vanni apre la porta del rifugio. “Barbara!” Il ragazzino corre tra le sue braccia.
“Buda! Buda!” esclama lei, stringendolo a sé.
Buda calls her: “Barbara!” She looks back, as Vanni opens the cottage door. “Barbara!” The boy runs into her arms.
“Buda! Buda!” she exclaims, holding him close.
Vanni si avvicina e la trascina via dal bambino.
Vanni steps over and pulls her away from the child.
Vanni afferra Buda con forza per la sciarpa che ha intorno al collo. “Bastardo!” gli dice.
Vanni grabs Buda tightly by the scarf around his neck. “Bastard!” he says.
Mentre Michelina grida: “Papà!”, Vanni getta il bambino sul pavimento.
As Michelina yells, “Dad!”, Vanni throws the boy onto the floor.
Buda inizia a urlare. Saro mette le mani intorno al collo di Vanni e iniziano a picchiarsi.
Buda starts to scream. Saro puts his hands around Vanni’s neck and they begin to brawl.
Gli altri siciliani osservano la scena senza intervenire.
The other Sicilians look on, without intervening.
Barbara esclama: “Saro! No!”
Barbara exclaims, “Saro! No!”
Lei urla, poi corre verso di loro e cerca di separarli, implorando Saro: "Lo lasci! Per pietà, lo lasci!"
She screams, then runs over and tries to separate them, imploring Saro,“Let him go! Please let him go!”
Saro lascia andare Vanni e indietreggia. Barbara afferra il davanti della giacca di Saro. La luce filtra attraverso le aperture tra le travi sopra di loro.
Saro releases Vanni and backs off. Barbara clutches the front of Saro’s jacket. Light streams in through the gaps in the beams overhead.
"Va’ via, Vanni” – dice Barbara – "Troppo male è venuto a tutti per colpa tua". Vanni non dice nulla. "Non posso più stare con te. Ammazzami se vuoi, ma io non posso più". Saro la abbraccia protettivo.
“Go away, Vanni,” Barbara says. “Too much harm has come to all of us because of you.” Vanni says nothing. “I can’t stay with you any longer. Kill me if you want, but I can’t anymore.” Saro puts his arm around her protectively.
Vanni, con un po' di fieno sulla giacca, si alza guardando Saro con aria truce. Si mette il cappello.
Vanni, a sprinkling of hay on his jacket, gets up, glaring at Saro. He puts on his cap.
Tutti fissano Vanni in silenzio. Rosa e Luca tengono Buda. La moglie di Misciu abbraccia Michelina, mentre la mano di Brasi è sulla spalla di Diodata. Saro e Barbara sono abbracciati.
Vanni risponde con uno sguardo freddo.
Everyone stares silently at Vanni. Rosa and Luca hold Buda. Misciu’s wife embraces Michelina, while Brasi’s hand is on Diodata’s shoulder. Saro and Barbara are arm in arm.
Vanni responds with a cold stare.
Poi si volta e se ne va, senza chiudere la porta del rifugio. Il mondo fuori è bianco di neve.
He turns and leaves, without closing the cottage door. The world outside is white with snow.
Quella notte, i siciliani dormono sul pavimento, stretti l'uno all'altro. La macchina da presa fa una panoramica sui loro volti.
That night, the Sicilians sleep on the floor, packed tightly together. The camera pans across their faces.
Barbara piange silenziosamente. Saro si mette seduto e la guarda con aria triste.
Barbara is crying quietly. Saro sits up and gazes at her sadly.
Al mattino, ben coperti, i siciliani escono nella neve e riprendono il loro viaggio verso la Francia. Brasi porta la chitarra dietro la schiena.
In the morning, wrapped warmly, the Sicilians step out into the snow, resuming their journey to France. Brasi carries the guitar on his back.
Camminano in fila per uno attraverso un ponte pedonale, portando i loro bagagli. Saro aiuta la moglie di Misciu a indossare il cappotto pesante. Lui alza lo sguardo verso le montagne prima di proseguire.
They walk in single file across a footbridge, carrying their luggage. Saro helps Misciu’s wife into her warm coat. He looks up at the mountains before moving on.
Poco dopo, Brasi nota qualcosa in lontananza nella neve. Chiama Saro, che gli dice: “Vai. Stai vicino a Barbara”.
“Ma, Saro…”
“Vai avanti, ti ho detto”.
A little later, Brasi notices something, far off in the snow. He calls Saro, who says, “Go. Stay close to Barbara.”
“But, Saro…”
“Go on, I said.”
Saro vede Vanni che cammina verso di lui. È una piccola figura scura nella distesa bianca della neve.
Saro sees Vanni walking towards him. He’s a small dark figure in the white expanse of snow.
“Vanni!" urla Saro. Mentre Vanni cammina con le mani in tasca, diventa sempre più grande nell'inquadratura.
“Vanni!” Saro yells. As Vanni walks, hands in his pockets, he grows larger and larger in the frame.
“Che vuoi ancora da noi, Vanni? Vattene. Lasciaci in pace”.
“What more do you want from us, Vanni? Go away. Leave us alone.”
Alla fine, i due uomini si trovano faccia a faccia. Ormai, Vanni sembra alto quanto la montagna alle sue spalle.
At last, the men come face to face. By now, Vanni seems as tall as the mountain behind him.
“Barbara ha capito che uomo sei, e non ti aveva tradito”.
“Barbara has realized what kind of man you are, and she didn't betray you.”
“Era rimasta a far da madre ai miei bambini, e ci rimarrà sempre perché io la sposo”. Vanni è immobile, silenzioso.
“She stayed to be a mother to my children, and she’ll always be there because I’m going to marry her.” Vanni is motionless, silent.
“Se è vero che le hai voluto bene, lasciala in pace” – dice, senza cattiveria – “E… senza rancore...” Saro gli porge la mano.
Vanni tira fuori la mano dalla tasca e la allunga, stringendo un coltello a serramanico.
“If it’s true that you loved her, leave her alone,” he says, not unkindly. “No hard feelings…” Saro offers his hand.
Vanni takes his hand out of his pocket and extends it – clutching a switchblade.
