Silvana e Granata corrono sotto un arco per ripararsi dalla pioggia. Si appoggiano alle pareti, guardando le donne che corrono verso il fiume.
Silvana and Granata run under an arch out of the rain. They lounge against the walls, looking out at the women running to the river.

They’re both chewing gum. “Come away from there,” Silvana says. “Do you want to be seen?”

She walks away and he follows, looking angry.

Outside, Silvana walks backwards. “Don’t you see you’re getting all wet?” she says, smiling. He looks up into the rain. She laughs at him, amused.

Grabbing a long stick, she pokes it into his chest. “I’ve got to go. Let me go!”
“Won’t you give me a kiss?”

“Yes, but stand back.” She keeps him at bay with the stick. Her teasing infuriates him.

He grabs the stick and raises it above his head. Frightened, she begs him, “Leave me alone! Let me go!”

We’re reminded of the horrifying scene in Rocco and His Brothers, where Nadia, also leaning against a tree, is stabbed to death by the enraged Simone.
Mentre Silvana giace nel fango, Granata si accovaccia su di lei. La macchina da presa taglia prima che possiamo vedere i dettagli brutali di ciò che intende fare.
As Silvana lies in the mud, Granata crouches over her. The camera cuts away before we see the brutal details of what he intends.

At the river, the rice workers have resumed work, under the pouring rain.
Francesca dice: "Silvana ancora non si vede".

“We called her so many times,” Irene replies.
Gianna suggests, “She must have something else to do.”

The camera pans down the line.
“What are you doing?” Anna asks Gabriella. “You have to pull the weeds, not the rice.” Gabriella holds her head. “Can’t you see? The rice is the one that doesn’t have the white line on the leaf.”

Grimacing, Gabriella stands, clutches her belly, and cries out in pain.

“It’s almost over! Don’t worry!” Gabriella assures her, but abruptly screams in pain.

Gianna aiuta Anna a sostenere Gabriella.

Francesca says, “We have to do something.”
“Portiamola sul greto”, dice Anna.
Gabriella urla di nuovo.
“Let’s take her to the riverbank,” says Anna.
Gabriella screams again.
Qualcuno dice: "Avverti le altre squadre! Canta!"
Gianna canta:
Gabriella ci manda a dire

Someone says, “Alert the other crews! Sing!”
Gianna sings:
Gabriella sends us to tell you
That she’s covered in blood
We see Silvana walking, head bowed.
