Regia / Director: Vittorio De Sica, 1944
We see an adding machine. Andrea is typing in numbers as his co-worker, Gigi, reads them out for him.
“Tu con un abito blu, cosa metteresti?” – chiede Andrea sorridendo – “una cravatta marrone o rossa?”
“Andrea!”
“With a blue suit, what would you wear?” Andrea asks, smiling, “a brown or red tie?”
“Andrea!” Gigi is shocked. “The brown kills the blue. Pearl gray, or a light blue. There’s no getting away from these two colors.” Gigi’s suit is striped in two light colors.
At home, Pricò is playing with his scooter when someone knocks at the door. Not seeing Agnese, he runs to answer himself.
It’s his mother’s friend from the park! Roberto takes off his hat, walks in, and closes the door behind him. ”Where’s mommy?”
“Mommy’s not home.”
“Go tell her I’m here, I have to speak to her.”
“Mommy’s not here.”
Appare Nina: "Ma perché hai fatto questo?"
"Sono andato ieri da tua sorella. Non te l'ha detto?"
Nina appears: “Why have you done this?”
“I went to your sister’s yesterday. Didn’t she tell you?”
"Ma non so niente io. Non voglio sapere più niente!" Pricò le corre incontro. "Vada via.
“I don’t know anything. I don’t want to know anything anymore!” Pricò runs to her. “Go away. The child is here.” She clasps a hand to his shoulder. “This is no way to come to the home of decent people. If you don't have respect for me, at least have respect for others.”
"Io non posso avere rispetto per nessuno. Voglio parlarti".
“I can’t have respect for anyone. I want to speak to you.”
As he walks towards her, she gently guides her son away. “Pricò, just a moment. The gentleman will be leaving shortly. You go play over there.”
Roberto follows Nina into another room, and she closes the door, which is guarded by a statuette of Mercury.*
*Such statuettes were typical in Roman household shrines in ancient times, where they invoked Mercury’s protection over the family’s daily life and wellbeing. The director has chosen this prop for its symbolism, to signal irony or perhaps hopefulness.
Playing with his rocking horse, Pricò hears the conversation. “I found the strength to stop seeing you. You have to do it too.”
“But, why?” Roberto shouts, and Pricò turns his head.
Nina inizia a singhiozzare. “Non dobbiamo vederci più”.
“Come se non ci conoscessimo?”
“Senti, Roberto, abbi pietà di me. Io non ho dimenticato niente di noi”. Lei ricomincia a piangere.
The camera lingers on Pricò as he listens, wringing his hands.
Nina begins to sob.”We can’t see each other anymore.”
“As if we didn’t know each other?”
“Listen, Roberto, have pity on me. I haven’t forgotten anything about us.” She begins to cry again. “But how do you expect me to forget that I’m a mother? How do you expect me to leave this house?”
At this, Pricò suddenly turns and calls, “Agnese!” and runs out of the room.
But she doesn’t come, and so he leans against the doorframe as the voices continue.
The camera follows Pricò as he slowly walks toward the voices. “I left Genoa without notice and I’m not going back again. I’m not going back without you. I don’t care!”
“You’re crazy, Roberto.”
“I’m fighting for my life.”
“And you don’t think about mine? My life is here, with my son.”
“But two years ago, was the child here or not? And yet you said yes.”
When he pushes open the door, Pricò sees Roberto grasping his mother and shaking her. “And didn’t you love me then? Didn’t you run away with me? Weren’t we happy? Then why do you want to ruin my life?”
Pricò runs up and starts hitting Roberto, yelling. “Go away! Go away! Go away!” He bites the man's hand.
Roberto lo spinge a terra.
Roberto pushes him to the floor.
The little boy sobs and Nina kneels beside him. “Oh, Pricò! My Pricò! Did you hurt yourself?” Roberto looks on impassively. Nina and Pricò look up at him: Pricò in tears, his mother accusingly.
Torniamo in banca.
Back at the bank. Andrea tells Gigi, “The advice that I want from you is this, you’re experienced and you know so many things. I’d like a beach where my wife can feel comfortable, meet new people. You know, here in Rome, she keeps running into acquaintances.”
“Alassio. If you want to make your wife happy, Alassio. I had a divine time there.”
“Alassio is a little too far.”
“But excuse me, near Rome the hotel price is the same. The difference is the two hundred lira more for the trip. What’s two hundred lira?”
“And then there will be the inconvenience of evening wear. My wife doesn’t love commotion, the social whirl.”
“But that’s the whole point!” Gigi puts on his stylish hat. “Ah, the social whirl, the social whirl – the things people do in your name!”
Andrea is convinced. “Maybe you’re right, a little elegance is called for.”
Nina dries her son's tears. “You’re all better now, Pricò, aren’t you?” He keeps sobbing. “I’m here, sweetheart. Mommy’s here with you, always with you.”
"Hai avuto paura? Ora tutto è passato, tutto è finito". Anche Nina ha le lacrime agli occhi. "E a papà, non dire niente a papà. Capito?"
“Were you frightened? Now it’s all over, everything is finished” Nina also has tears in her eyes. “And Daddy, don’t say anything to Daddy. Understand?”
“No, I won’t say anything to him.” The camera zooms in on the child’s tearful face.
